You can create pretty much anything in Minecraft, from a quaint little town to a megalopolis filled with skyscrapers. The entire game revolves around the idea of placing blocks to build anything – cities included. Minecraft is a staple when it comes to building games. Oskar Stålberg, the developer of Townscaper, describes the game as an “experimental passion project, more of a toy than a game.” The gameplay is straightforward: you place blocks above the water that automatically turn into little houses, arches, stairways, bridges, and lush backyards, depending on their configuration. ![]() There is no story to follow, no stressful timer or budget. With its low-poly colorful graphics, this game doesn’t really have a goal. If you are looking for a relaxing indie city building game on the Nintendo Switch, Townscaper is worth checking out. No matter the route you take, you will have to build various cities and optimize their districts. The second expansion of the game, Gathering Storm, adds a sixth victory condition: Diplomacy. There are five ways to win a game in Civilization VI: Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, and Score. Why limit yourself to building a city when you can shape an entire civilization? Civilization VI puts you at the head of your own civilization as it goes through the challenges of time. It is up to you to find the best way to protect your kingdom and become the best ruler ever. Various creatures will try to destroy everything you built and steal your coins and crown. But be careful, as these lands are not peaceful. ![]() You can hire mercenaries to protect your kingdom against outside threats, build defenses around your town, or set off to explore a nearby mysterious forest. To do so, you will need to spend your coins wisely. Your goal is to make your kingdom thrive. You play as the king or the queen of your own procedurally generated kingdom. Kingdom is an indie 2D sidescroller with pixel art graphics. These small challenges give the game a bit more strategy as you progress. For instance, you might find a tile with a windmill that would need to be connected to at least six-grain tiles. Matching these tiles will help your town grow, and they’ll even toss in a challenge or two. For instance, you might have a tile with a forest which would go great with your other greenery tiles, or a tile with grains. Each tile has something unique which will help shape other tiles. You start with a stack, and placing it on the board is your job. This is a game where you’re literally just placing down tiles. But if you don’t want to go through the hassles of these minor little aspects of a city, there are relaxing and laid-back alternatives. These titles want you to go through the finer details of what makes a city thrive. There are city-building games that are very in-depth. These include anything from massive tools for cooks to learn how to create a giant pizza to a building for a jousting class. Next, you’ll shape the inside of the buildings, place down certain classes and have what they need to teach the leaders of tomorrow. First, you’ll plot out where the buildings will go and place decor around them. Within the game building a campus takes a bit of time.
